Nearly Perfect Louisiana Belt Plate
Item #: OS-7784
Steve Mullinax, author of Confederate Belt Buckles and Plates, suggested that these plates were made locally in New Orleans between April 1861 and April 1862 when the city fell. The plate bears the great seal of Louisiana, a mother pelican feeding her young from the blood of her breast, as do many variations of Louisiana belt plates. It is in nearly perfect condition; the corners having been dented in by the soldier to prevent the corners from poking into his abdomen and considerable wear, but not abuse. According to a typewritten provenance the plate came out of an old New Orleans collection. Price $5,000.00 USD
