“Virginia Style", CS Two Piece Sword Belt
Item #: OS-7907
Note Roman Numerals II "> Note Roman Numerals II The left hanger has been resewn "> The left hanger has been resewn Front of resewn hanger "> Front of resewn hanger Reverse of resewn hanger "> Reverse of resewn hanger This style is known as the "Virginia Style” to delineate it from the "Richmond Style”, but both were made in Richmond, Virginia, and were used primarily by the enlisted men of the Cavalry Corp of the Army of Northern Virginia. When complete, it would have had two sword hangers, and an over the shoulder strap to support the weight of a revolver, a sword, cap box, cartridge box and cartridges. This example though lacking the over shoulder strap and one and a half of the hangers, is still a very nice example. It does however have a repair where the stitch lines for the reverse hanger crossed the belt. This stitch line creates a natural weak point and the belt had separated at the line. A part of the original strap was sewn over the old stitch line to join the two parts of the belt. This can only be decerned with careful examination, but it is nevertheless there. The rest of the belt is exceptionally strong and supple. The red tint of the buckle shows the high copper content that is so desirable to collectors. Both the tongue and the wreath are marked with the Roman Numeral II. With the exception of the aforementioned repairs, the belt and buckle are completely original and in excellent condition.
