Local Jeweler Made Palmetto Hat Pin
Item #: OS-7345
Virtually all brass Palmetto hat pins were imported from the North, or from England. This two inch tall brass pin was locally made by a jeweler. The Palmetto and the ovals were cast separately. The detail in the frond was first cast and then chased with an engraving tool to clean it up. The ovals and a T-bar pin were soldered onto the Palmetto, and then the whole device was washed in rose gold. Surviving photographs show that the Palmetto emblem
was ubiquitous during the War. There is a collection number on the back of the pin. I have left this in hopes that someone will recognize the collection that it came from. This example is in excellent condition. |
