Marked Dufilho Foot Officer’s Sword
Item #: OS-8015
This is one of the most beautiful foot officer swords I have ever offered, but unfortunately it is not without its issues. It was made in New Orleans, Louisiana by Agrider H. Dufilho. Dufilho made some of the finest swords of the Confederate era. 1860 found him located at 21 Royal Street as a maker of surgical instruments and fine cutlery of every description. The Confederate government purchased of him on May 11, 1861, 2 amputation cases, 1 trepanning, on May 30, 1861, 2 amputating cases, on March 27, 1862, 50 Naval cutlasses, on April 5, 1862, 50 cutlasses and on April 15, 1862, 100 cutlasses. There were probably were other sales, but the records do not survive. He is best known for his private sales of some of the most exquisite swords made in the Confederacy. On April 24, 1862 New Orleans fell to the invaders which ended Dufilho’s sales to the Confederate government, and was certainly the end of his Confederate sword making enterprise for private sale. Thus, this sword had to have been made prior to the end of April, 1862. The sword’s leather grip, throat washer and twisted brass wire have been replaced and the blade has been buffed. On a brighter note, the hilt remains tight and the blade is beautifully bright and retains a pretty strong "Dufilho N. Orleans” maker mark. The sword’s scabbard appears to be perfection. The mounts and drag are original to the sword, but the leather was deteriorated, so the leather was reclaimed from another sword (not Confederate) and the original Dufilho mounts and drag were installed on the replacement leather. This made for a beautiful restored scabbard. The sword knot is a post war addition for acetic purposes only. The bottom line; this is a beautiful and rare, heavily restored sword. Price $9,600.00 USD
