Confederate purchasing agent Caleb Huse purchased approximately 7000 Kerr’s patent revolvers from the London Armory during the War Between the States. Some, but not all, of these were stamped with the JS over an anchor like the one shown here. There are enough Confederate associated Enfield rifles and Kerr revolvers bearing this mark to say with certainty that all arms having this stamp are Confederate purchased weapons.

These revolvers were issued to Confederate cavalry in large numbers, including the 7^th, 11^th, 12^th, 18^thand 35^th Virginia as well as the 24^th Georgia and 8^th Texas.

This particular revolver, serial number 4252, falls near the middle of the known Confederate range of over 9000. It has a fully visible, though faded, JS over anchor Confederate inspector stamping in the grip. Save for the arbor retaining pin (not the arbor itself, just the pin and spring), which is a replacement, the revolver is in good, original condition. The metal was cleaned at some point leaving some unevenness, but the patina has returned. Because of this, the markings are difficult to read. Indexing is perfect which is not a given with these guns as they are known to drift over time. The rifling is in good condition. The checkering on the grips remains very nice.
