This
eighteen and a half inch, spear point Bowie knife is one of the most iconic
Confederate knives in the collecting world. First seen in author and pathfinding Confederate researcher/ collector
William Albaugh’s 1960 edition of Confederate Edged Weapons. It was a part of his personal collection and
hung on the wall of his home among his most prized Confederate artifacts. A copy of the picture showing the knife
hanging on his wall is included here. In
his book Mr. Albaugh noted that the knife was found in the Shenandoah Valley of
Virginia and no doubt belonged to a member of the Army of Northern Virginia.
The knife published in Confederate Bowie
Knives, by Melton, Phillips & Sexton on page 161. It is also published
in Wm. Albaugh’s Confederate Edged Weapons, in which he states that it
was found in the Valley of Virginia.
The knife is in beautiful, untouched
condition. The upper tin mount was
originally fastened with hide glue and it has come loose, and the tin toe has
dropped off for the same reason. The
leather remains strong, soft and supple. The knife itself is perfection;
without flaw or nick.
