This extremely rare, non-excavated, sword belt plate is rated a 9+ on
the Mullinax scale. He mentions that at least four have been excavated;
one at Bermuda Hundred, VA, one at an Orange, VA 1863-1864 Confederate
winter camp, and two from the Gettysburg campaign.
The plate is in exceptional condition; just beautiful! It is
covered in a wonderful, natural patina. The belt that it is sewn to is
not its Wartime belt. It was done long ago, perhaps for veterans use or
perhaps for very early display. Of this I cannot be certain. It could
be left on this belt, or if preferred, there would be no harm in
removing the belt and displaying the plate alone.
As mentioned, these plates are extremely rare and you will likely never see another non excavated example. |
