Beautifully Etched Boyle & Gamble

Field & Staff Officer’s Sword

Description and Photograph

Boyle & Gamble was the Confederacy’s most prolific maker of officer’s swords and the company’s field and staff officer’s sword is easily the most recognized sword produced during the Confederate era.  This sword is designated a Field and Staff Sword because of the C S cast into the guard.  This is a throwback to the U.S. Regulation Field and Staff where officers, major and above, were authorized to carry such a sword.  This was a very lax standard in the Confederate Army, where everyone used anything that they could get.

There is much symbolism cast into the counter guard of this sword.  The corn represents the South’s agricultural base, the laurel wreath, the valor of the Confederate soldier and the star over “C S” is the rising star of the Confederacy.

The example shown here is in beautiful condition.  The grip wrap is 100% complete and original.  The wire wrap is original and tight, and is an upgrade to double twisted from their standard single wire wrap.  The guard is completely tight without the slightest hint of play and has a most pleasing, deep, rich patina.  The blade, with the exception of some smattering of carbon staining, is completely bright and nick free from ricasso to point and it has never been repointed.  It is etched with flags, cannon, vines and scroll work and includes the small B&G CSA without a shield.  It is benchmarked number one.

Its original scabbard is also a thing of beauty.  It retains nearly 100% of its surface glazing; the leather is strong and the stitching tight.  Notice also that the pins have never loosened causing the mounts to slide up and down the scabbard in the manner that has scarred so many of this manufacturer's scabbards.  The drag contains the original pin, but must have slid off at some point as I can see a slight bit of glue peeping out of the top.  The mounts and the drag have such deep uniform patina’s that there is no doubt that all are original to this scabbard.

If you have been looking long and hard for a great example of this rare sword, look no farther, because this is only $18,900.00, a price not to be beat for comparable quality!
