Louisiana “Pelican with Rays”

Belt Plate

Description and Photograph

The belt plate shown here is known as the Pelican with Rays for obvious reasons.  The typical Louisiana belt plate depicts a resting pelican with folded wings feeding its young from the blood of its own breast. The pelican in this pattern is still feeding its young from the blood of its own breast, but its wings are up as if about to take flight.  And, instead of a plain background, it has distinctive rays emanating from it all around.

The crisply die struck plate has a soldered on tongue and belt loop bar and is extremely heavily gilted.  It would have originally had two small brass wire keeper hooks on the belt loop bar which are now missing.  With this exception, the plate is perfect.
