This is one of the very
rarest of the CS belt plates. In 1974 when Syd Kerksis’ Plates and Buckles
of the American Military was published; none were known to exist. By the time Steve Mullinax’s Confederate
Belt Buckles and Plates was published in 1991 three had been recovered. Two had been excavated at Gettysburg and one
at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia. This may
make a fourth example or it may be one of the three mentioned by Mr.
Mullinax. Unfortunately, the recovery history
of this example has been lost (how the heck does that happen?)
This example is in very
good to excellent excavated condition; it would be perfect but for the bend shown
in the pictures.
